THE SIGN CONVENTION
One column for spending. One for credits.
A credit card balance is normally money you owe, while a transaction export describes movement on the card. Mixing those concepts can reverse the meaning of a row. This tool uses negative signed amounts for purchases and fees, and positive signed amounts for refunds and payments. It leaves any printed running balance as shown by the issuer.
Purchases and fees
Posted merchant purchases, cash advances and fees are card spending. They appear as positive values in Money Out and negative values in Signed Amount. A fee may be printed separately from ordinary merchant activity, so the review table gives it its own type rather than folding it into a purchase label.
Refunds and reversals
A posted merchant refund or reversal is money coming back to the card account. It appears in Money In and has a positive signed amount. Check whether the issuer shows a true posted credit or merely a pending authorization release; the latter should not become a transaction row.
Card repayments
A payment received from your bank reduces the amount owed, but is not a refund from a merchant. We label it Payment and show it as Money In. Payment due, minimum due and payment-summary boxes are not separate posted transactions unless the payment also appears in the transaction list.
A CAREFUL WORKFLOW
Review structure, not just numbers.
Card statements often show purchases and credits in different columns, sections or typographic styles. The document model reads posted rows, but you should inspect its result against the original before using it for bookkeeping.
Check the billing periodConfirm the first and last transaction dates against the card statement. A due date or closing date is not a transaction date.
Verify type and signChoose the right transaction type in the review panel. Opposite signs, blank dates and inconsistent debit/credit fields trigger a warning before dedicated export.
Keep the originalDownload the reviewed Excel workbook or UTF-8 CSV, then retain the issuer PDF so you can trace any row later. The sample can be explored without spending a conversion page.
WHAT THE FILE CONTAINS
A card-specific export, not a renamed bank CSV.
The dedicated downloads include Date, Type, Description, Reference, Money Out, Money In, Signed Amount and Printed Balance. The Excel workbook adds a short sign-convention note. Values remain numeric in Excel, and CSV uses quoted UTF-8 fields. Transaction descriptions are kept close to the source, so merchant names and references remain useful during reconciliation.
Low-confidence extraction or ambiguous card direction must be verified with the original. You can edit extracted cells in the transaction table, then choose a type and confirm any flagged row. If the original is too blurred or cropped to verify, obtain a clearer statement instead of guessing. This converter is a preparation and review aid, not an automated accounting audit.
The visible sample is fictional. Your own result depends on the legibility and layout of the file you upload.
Can I convert a scanned credit card statement to Excel?+
Yes. Upload a readable scanned PDF, PNG or JPG, inspect the extracted rows and download the card-specific Excel workbook. A PDF counts one page at a time toward your available allowance. Clear, complete scans give the model a better chance of reading dates and card credits correctly.
Why is a payment positive?+
The export uses a card-activity convention: spending is negative; money paid back or refunded to the card is positive. The issuer may show an outstanding balance as a positive amount owed. That printed balance is retained separately and is not treated as a cash-flow sign.
Does the converter calculate my statement balance?+
No. It extracts posted rows and any printed balances it can see. Interest, foreign-currency adjustments, statement credits and page-break carryovers can make a simple running sum misleading. Reconcile the spreadsheet with the issuer document yourself before relying on it.
Can I use this file in bookkeeping software?+
Use the Excel or CSV file as reviewed source data, then map its columns according to your accounting system. If you need a dedicated QuickBooks CSV or Xero CSV, use those workflows and verify their import preview before posting transactions.
